Lodi talked about the emerging issues in his pupils’ individual compositions, and the success, or failure, of their compositions. He noticed that when children chose what to write about, their compositions were more successful, something that highlighted their interest in the argument or theme they proposed as an important component of a successful text. The pupils’ written texts, their drawings, and paintings, all became the focus of collective discussions, and students were encouraged to express their opinion on the work of their peers. Lodi became more and more convinced that this was a successful way to inspire his students to write and express their views. It was through this exercise in collective writing, followed by discussions, that he and his pupils published a book entitled Cipà ­ printed by a small publishing company in 1961. Because of its acclaimed success, it was later republished by Einaudi, one of the most important publishing companies in Italy, becom ing a classic in Italian children literature. The story narrates the adventures of a little sparrow. It was inspired by Lodi’s pupils, who, as they were looking outside the window of their classroom, saw a sparrow brooding some eggs. They began to write a fictional account of it, accompanied by their own drawings of the different moments of the story.
